More Building Bluestem

We continue to find ways for improving Bluestem's community impact and in the Fall of 2024, launched our "Wing of the Barn" campaign to address the nonprofit's  inclusivity, accessibility, and sustainability goals.

The Wing of the Barn is planned as an open-sided, 20 to 30 foot extension of the existing barn and roof, on its western side. It will have a natural floor and provide for:
  • A more accessible, sheltered vantage point from which visitors with mobility needs can experience Bluestem.
  • A covered gathering space with protection from the weather for burial services and community events .
  • The installation of a pledged donation of solar panels, taking Bluestem into the renewable energy future.

The Wing of the Barn will broaden Bluestem's ability to better serve a diversity of community members, and specifically those with mobility needs who may not be able to navigate the gravel roads and trails. We expect that assistive devices such as walkers and wheelchairs will be more navigable in this new space.

The Wing of the Barn project also aligns with Bluestem’s sustainability goals, bringing solar energy to the property.

In 2024, visitors and new donors contributed $60,000 toward this important project. We continue to fundraise in 2025, while developing project concepts and renderings, with the hope of sharing these important next steps with the larger community, before breaking ground.

Can you make a donation today?

Your gift will help provide a more accessible, sustainable, sheltered space for everyone at Bluestem.

Please contact Bluestem staff directly, if you would like to discuss how you or your organization can support this project with expertise, financial resources, or experienced know how.
Thank you!
We are grateful for the opportunity to continue
enhancing Bluestem's community impact.

MAKE A GIFT
" I spent a recent late afternoon at Bluestem, marveling at the high grasses, late blooming bee balm and asters, and other plants blooming in the fields and meadows that just two years ago were covered with dried remnants of corn. Even back then there was an undeniable feel to the land that made it easy to imagine it transforming into what it is now: a vibrant, thriving landscape inviting peaceful exploration, contemplation, and natural burial. A landscape where nature is enough."
