And receive our weekly Land Stewards Update. Emailed every Thursday evening with information about the upcoming Friday workday. Bluestem’s aesthetic is measured in its simplicity, integrity, and durability. Decisions about “improvements” to Bluestem are made wholistically through the lens of what’s sustainably possible, for people, for the soils, for water quality, for the flora and fauna, and for the community. The absence of extraneous decoration and fuss, signifies our reverence for nature, and makes room for beauty and wonder in its most natural form.
Priorities in our second year include drainage improvements for stormwater, digging trenches for future well water, reseeding the grasslands, and prepping for burials, including learning how to shroud! There's always something new and interesting happening -- bring your skills and come join us Friday mornings.
How Far We've Come
Workdays 2022 A priority in our first year was to recognize the features around the property that can serve as natural sanctuaries for families holding services, community meetings, and church services. Bluestem's early volunteers threw themselves into limbing branches, moving tree stumps, clearing poison ivy, pulling grapevines, stacking rocks, filling holes, and unearthing the beauty of Bluestem. We lost some weight and gained many new friends and muscle groups!
Trails draw people deeper into the property and pass through the grasslands, woodlands and around every field. Throughout Bluestem, enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature amidst the cooling shade of cedars, dogwoods, and Carolina shagbark. This is a place for slowing down, rediscovering one's senses, and allowing the breeze and earth to center our weary souls. The crumble of leaves, broken cobwebs, fallen trees and stumps slowly sinking into the ground remind us everywhere, to honor the natural transitions from life into death.
The Wilkerson Grading team helped improve Bluestem's parking area and roads. Both are now wider, more resilient to weather, and more accessible for Bluestem visitors.
